How Lexigramming Works

A lexigram typically follows these basic principles:

  1. Start with the original name or word.
    • For example: “ASTRONOMY”
  2. Use only the letters that appear in the original.
    • You don’t add letters that aren’t there.
  3. Rearrange those letters to discover other words hidden within the letter set.
    • A lexigrammer might find words such as moon, star, astral, etc., depending on the available letters and the particular rules being used.
  4. Look for a meaningful pattern or message.
    • The individual words aren’t necessarily the goal. The interesting part is how the words relate to one another and whether they form a larger theme.

Lexigramming a Name

With a person’s name, practitioners may look for words that describe:

  • Personality traits
  • Talents and abilities
  • Life purpose
  • Relationships
  • Challenges
  • Spiritual themes
  • Strengths and weaknesses
  • Potential experiences or events

For example, if a name contains the letters necessary to create words associated with ART, INTUITION, VISION, TEACHING, a practitioner might interpret those words collectively as pointing toward an artistic or intuitive calling.

Lexigramming vs. Anagrams

They’re related, but not exactly the same.

Anagram:
Usually rearranges all the letters into another word or phrase.

Lexigram:
Looks for multiple meaningful words and concepts hidden within the available letters, often allowing letters to be used according to a particular set of rules.

So an anagram asks:

“What can these letters be rearranged into?”

A lexigram asks:

“What meanings and messages can be discovered within these letters?”

The Esoteric Perspective

In spiritual practices, lexigramming is sometimes viewed as a way of uncovering a latent meaning encoded within a name. Some practitioners believe that names are not arbitrary and that the words hidden within them can reveal aspects of a person’s identity or destiny.

There is no scientific evidence that lexigrams objectively predict a person’s future. It is better understood as a symbolic or intuitive interpretive practice—somewhat like numerology, tarot, or other systems of symbolic meaning.
