Astrology is a belief system that suggests the positions and movements of celestial bodies—such as the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars—are related to human personality, relationships, and life events. It has been practiced in many cultures for thousands of years and remains popular today for self-reflection and entertainment.
Here’s a simple overview:
What astrology is based on
Astrology uses the positions of celestial bodies at the exact time and place of a person’s birth to create a birth chart (also called a natal chart). Astrologers interpret this chart to describe personality traits, strengths, challenges, and potential life themes.
A birth chart includes:
- Sun sign: Represents your core identity and sense of self.
- Moon sign: Associated with emotions and inner feelings.
- Rising sign (Ascendant): The way you present yourself to the world and how others may first perceive you.
- Planets: Each is thought to symbolize different aspects of life, such as communication, love, ambition, and growth.
- Houses: Twelve areas representing different parts of life, like career, relationships, home, and finances.
- Aspects: The angular relationships between planets, which astrologers interpret as influencing how different traits interact.
The 12 zodiac signs
Aries (March 21 – April 19) Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Leo (July 23 – August 22) Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Libra (September 23 – October 22) Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Each sign is traditionally associated with particular personality characteristics, although different astrological traditions may describe them differently.
Different types of astrology
There are several traditions, including:
- Western astrology: The most familiar system in Europe and the Americas, based on the tropical zodiac.
- Vedic (Indian) astrology: Also known as Jyotish, it uses the sidereal zodiac and places strong emphasis on predicting life events.
- Chinese astrology: Based on a 12-year animal cycle along with elements such as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Do horoscopes work?
Daily, weekly, and monthly horoscopes are simplified interpretations based mainly on your Sun sign. Professional astrologers generally consider a full birth chart to provide a much more detailed reading.
What does science say?
Astrology has been extensively studied by scientists. The current scientific consensus is that there is no reliable evidence that the positions of celestial bodies influence personality or predict future events in the ways astrology claims. Studies have generally not found astrology to perform better than chance in controlled tests.
That said, many people enjoy astrology as:
- A tool for self-reflection
- A way to explore personality and relationships
- A cultural or spiritual practice
- A source of entertainment and conversation
